Screen Recordings & Heatmaps
About this course
Screen recordings and heatmaps are powerful tools for understanding how real users experience your site. With Hotjar or similar tools, you can capture hundreds of sessions and filter them by audience, traffic source, or device. By reviewing at least 100 recordings, you can identify consistent patterns of confusion, frustration, or disengagement. For example, maybe visitors don’t scroll to key sections, misinterpret buttons, or abandon after certain content. These observations help you create data-backed hypotheses about what’s blocking conversions, rather than relying on assumptions.
Heatmaps complement recordings by showing aggregate behavior at scale: where people click, how far they scroll, and where they hover. Click heatmaps reveal whether CTAs attract attention or if visitors are distracted by the wrong elements. Scroll maps highlight whether critical content is above the fold and whether drop-offs cluster around certain sections. Mouse maps provide clues about interest in non-clickable elements. Together, these insights let you prioritize interventions, from redesigning confusing sections to reordering content or adding clarity to CTAs. By systematically analyzing heatmaps and recordings, documenting findings, and turning them into actionable tests, you create a repeatable process for boosting usability and conversions across your funnel.
